What's In a Name? Ask Ilana

The only positive note about being sick and stuck at home on a cold day is that I have time to elaborate about the latest episode. I started to study some of the last names on the lighthouse compass, and came across one that I believe to be significant: 25 - Asher.

My theory is that number 25 represents Ilana. Not only is there an obvious tie between her and ASH on the island, the name Ilana Asher offers up a few fascinating anagrams:

Heal, As Rain
Her, An Alias

That the name Asher is crossed out and Ilana was brought back to the island by Jacob leads me to believe that we will be seeing others who have left (alive) brought back in some capacity as well. Perhaps the person that Jacob is currently awaiting is one of them. 'Special' Lost Boys Aaron and Walt seem to be the most relevant possibilities...

I have not seen the name Hume either in the cave or on the compass, so I suppose that eliminates my previous speculation about Desmond. It is puzzling that both Widmore and Hawking are absent from both locations as well.

In addition, we do not know how much time passed between Jacob's visit to Ilana while she was in a Russian hospital and her return to the island via Ajira 316...but I have a strong suspicion that she healed rather quickly. And if I had to venture a guess, her unknown yet severe injuries were caused by burns. Recalling the final image of Jacob burning up in the fire in the S5 finale, I have to question whether or not her injuries were sustained in a similar fashion.

Counterpoint:

Here is where I may be entirely incorrect - biblically speaking, Asher is the SON of Jacob. However, Asher had a daughter named Serah, who was Jacob's only granddaughter. So if Ilana does represent Serah (and no, I do not think it could be Jack's ex-wife Sarah), that would further fuel my thought process about the generations of families who have been to the island [see previous episode analysis for details].

Overall thoughts? Be gentle, I'm attempting to be analytical while buried beneath a stack of blankets. :)

Nice, I dig your theory. The only thing with Asher being the son of Jacob, is that all of these names are surnames, who knows.

What I want to know is...WHY does Shephard look weird? Almost as if it were rubbed off and re-written. A timeline rewritten perhaps?

ahhhhh lost.

Nice Job, as usual. Just a few ideas. Hume has to be on the list somewhere. As not all of the numbers and names have been revealed yet, I am making a guess that Desmond is number 305 - The compass bearing that everyone was traveling to and from the island on before it moved.

I have also come to the conclusion that the name Shephard is referring to Jack's mom. At first I thought Christian since the others mentioned that Jack wasnt on the list in season 3. Seeing Jack's parents house in the mirror(which Jack hasnt lived in for many years) certainly lends credibility to it being one of his parents. I only suggest perhaps it's Mama Shephard because Christian has not been at that house for 3 years. Maybe even Mama Shepherd is the one that Jacob wants to come to the island.

That being said, it seems more likely that it would be Walt or even Aaron.

And I love your ideas on the connection between Jacob and Ilana. I find that relationship to be fascinating and cant wait to see how it pans out.

BTW, a friend has long had a theory that Des is adopted. In that case his true birth name could be Wallace here.

Des is the only major character that we've have NEVER seen as a child. Lost is withholding this for a reason.

She believes Des' specialness is due to him being born to time traveling parents. Perhaps born to Jack and Kate and then given left in the 1970's. (It's too late for that, I know, and I don't expect it to happen.)

But I agree there's something to Des mysterious lack of backstory. And this is a great temporary guess as to how Des can be "Wallace" and be on his way.

Remarking on the 'Serah' point, wasnt there speculation last season that Ilana actually said "Sarah" when she woke up after the crash of 316?

I seem to remember that. What do u think Jo?

I just got back from a 3 day conference (I'd rather have been on a walkabout!)and now I'm two days behind the post Lost conversation :-( I was wondering if anyone noticed that the actor who played young David is on another show about redemption - Saving Grace. He is Grace's nephew. Also, the picture of Jack looking at his reflection got me thinking about family trees (note the branches behind him). Good catch re the rock on the table in Raised by Another. I watched that fairly recently and missed that completely! I've always thought seeing Locke with one white and one black eye was really creepy! I enjoy you blog very much. Thank you for taking the time to share with us your thoughts!

Hope you're feeling better, Jo. I guess I must be in the minority but I liked this episode straight off. Not so much because of Jack, who is still maddeningly self-involved, but because Hurley and Jacob really rock! Hurley always says the things a lot of us fans have been thinking...and the scene with him and Dogen and Jacob really made me laugh. Although he sees dead guys, Hurley is in many ways the only really firmly grounded one of the survivors.

Like you, I immediately thought of Desmond when Jacob said someone was coming, especially after he said he was sure that even without the lighthouse, that person would find his way there.

But I am thinking that Claire needs Charlie more than ever to bring her out of her awful murdering zombie state...besides the obvious reminder of Rousseau, the whole suddenly dark Claire made me think of Michael, a good (if flawed) character gone very bad.

I'm anxious to see what happens when Sawyer and Jin see each other again.

Thanks again for all your insights :-)

Love reading your blog. Was thinking about 108/Wallace. Really hoping it will be Des because I miss him. Found this on wiki and wanted to share a fun LOSTIE thing:

Wallace Hume Carothers (April 27, 1896 – April 29, 1937) was an American chemist, inventor and the leader of organic chemistry at DuPont, credited with the invention of nylon.

I think it's very possible that Desmond is not on either of the lists.

We know that Jacob and the MIB are bound by rules, and there have been references to candidates having to also follow some version of those rules.

So, if the rules really don't apply to Desmond, could it be because he is NOT a candidate?

I just went and had a look at more of the Sunset pics and came across this one of Henry Ian Cusick with the number 3 on the sleeve of his top. http://twitpic.com/16n22j

According to Lostpedia http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Candidates the number 3 & Hume have not yet made an appearance regarding being a candidate.
